2007 Salary Survey - Reference Points

Teacher Salaries

Teacher salaries provide one point of reference for a minister’s compensation. Based on a sample of 35 high schools drawn from Indiana K-12 school data (http://mustang.doe.state.in.us), the average salary for high school teachers in Indiana is between $43,200 and $52,390.

Other Denominations

Compensation guidelines for ministers in other denominations also provides a reference point for personnel and finance committees as they plan for ministerial compensation. As one example, the 2008 Compensation Guidelines for United Church of Christ clergy in the Indiana-Kentucky Conference suggest a cash salary, not including housing, of $31,753 for clergy with 4-9 years experience serving congregations with less than 150 average attendance.

One guideline for determining an appropriate amount for housing if a parsonage is not provided is a monthly allowance equal to 1% of the median value of houses in the area. If the median value of houses in the community were $150,000, an appropriate allowance might be $1,500 per month or $18,000 per year. Using the UCC salary guideline, the total salary plus housing would be $49,753.
